The Bioneers Conference
Attending the Bioneers Conference was deeply meaningful on a personal level because it opened my eyes to the many ways I could pursue what I care about through advocacy and creative work. One of my closest family members serves on the board, which allowed me to meet inspiring people across a wide range of fields and engage in conversations I would not normally have access to. Being in that environment made me refocus on a desire to help raise awareness about climate issues because I was surrounded by people actively working toward solutions.
In the context of this portfolio, the conference felt like a moment where color was introduced into my purpose. After a long period of exploration and uncertainty (the “sketching” phase), Bioneers gave vibrancy and direction to ideas that had previously felt abstract to me. Seeing how scientists, activists, designers, technologists, and storytellers could all contribute to climate solutions helped me imagine how my own interests in Informatics and design could be part of that picture.
Hearing from a variety of people who had devoted their lives to environmental work also shifted how I understood impact. It showed me that interdisciplinary thinking and specifically creativity can be used to create meaningful change. The experience didn’t just expand my knowledge - it helped me see that the path forward did not have to be narrowly defined.
In that way, attending Bioneers “gave me color”: it marked the point where my academic and creative interests, and commitment to justice, began to align more. It encouraged me to move beyond exploration and start imagining how I could intentionally design work that reflects my values.
I have gone to Bioneers off and on since I was a baby because of connections my family has to the conference. Here is a picture of me and Patrisse Cullors, one of the founders of Black Lives Matter. It was really incredible to look back on this terrible picture of me when I was 15 and reflect on how much my life and purpose have changed since then. I feel like this time around, I spent a lot more time focusing on how I wanted to reflect my learnings in my work and what I put time into moving forward.
